The Fourth Trimester

"Everyone wants to hold the baby but who will hold the mother?""

Jabina Coleman, The Lactation Therapist.

When we say Postpartum, we refer to the Postpartum period immediately after the birth of the baby. It is also often called the Fourth trimester or sometimes the Sacred Window. Depending on how the birth unfolded, depending on what was the outcome, the postpartum period comes with its own set of challenges. When you research the simple word “postpartum” in your browser, the first pages of results you obtain are all about postpartum depression. This should tell you how crucial support during the Fourth trimester is. It is a precious and vulnerable time for the new mother. The main goal during this fragile period is to “mother the mother”, to nourish her, to nurture her and honor her. She too was born. Regardless of how she labored and birthed her baby, all ways are not easy. It is a Rite of Passage.

Thrive, not survive.

In my postpartum doula role, I am by your side to help you thrive and not just survive your postpartum period. I am your personal guide through your Fourth trimester. I am the extra layer of support that help you learn to navigate life with a new baby, normalize the overwhelming experiences, help you recognize when and how to reach out for extra support, and tame the chaos and clutter that newborns can sometimes bring along.
